Music Workshops

We’re planning on having Bluegrass Guitar, Dobro, Banjo, Mandolin, fiddle, maybe bass, harmony, songwriting -arranging and full band WORKSHOPS this year. Let us know what else you might be interested in. The workshops will be going throughout most of the festival so give a call and get signed up.

Beginning Mandolin – B.K. “Nick” Nicholson

603612_549328345109728_684129364_n  B.K. is originally from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania but has spent most of his time in Southern California, where he was influenced by rock & roll, blues, folk, and country music. He is also a songwriter and has recorded several projects over the years mainly in the rock & roll genres. In “High Mountain Road” he plays hard driving Bluegrass mandolin, and sings lead and harmony vocals.

You can listen to Nick when High Mountain Road will take the stage at 3:00 p.m.

3:30 – 4:30….. er so…..

“MANDOLIN TECHNIQUES” with Peter Lauterbach

Peter plays several instruments but spends most of his time on one of his classic mandolins. Peter plays in “The Waits” as well as “The Shirthouse Band”. Jason plays with several bands around the area. Two of them will be performing here at our festival this weekend – The Taildraggers and Chris Clarke & Plow.

Calvin - Dobro

Calvin Patton is the resident Dobro player for the Ash Street Ramblers. His history is shrouded in mystery. The workshop will provide a basic understanding of the instrument including, but not limited to : history, tunings, picking patterns, and chord formation.

James Reams is an American guitarist and member of the musical group Barnstormers. He has performed for over 20 years and widely known as “Ambassador of Bluegrass” for his dedication to bluegrass and oldtime music. James brings over 20 years of experience as a bandleader and songwriter to share with those attending this workshop. You’ll learn about song structure, song topic, lyrics, rhyme schemes, and arrangements as well as gain some insights and valuable tips.

Hot Club of Cowtown, our special guests from Austin, TX. performing at 7:30 Sat night, will be conducting three separate workshops at 5:30:





Jake Irwin will be doing a SLAP BASS Workshop at 5:30…. For you players who keep the low down goin….. this one is not to be missed!





Elana James  will be conducting a WESTERN SWING FIDDLE workshop, also at 5:30. Elana is one of the premier fiddle players on the planet and is adept at teaching these workshops…… gotta be there for this if you’re a player who is inclined to saw the bow……

SUNDAY, May 4th:

11:30 – 12:30

Bluegrass, Etc. – Full Band Workshop with Dennis Caplinger, John Moore & Steve Spurgin. The guys will be giving up some tips on how the heck anyone can play these instruments this fast…..


Bluegrass, Etc. will be doing a couple of sets on Saturday this year and one on Sunday, in addition to their workshop.

Many of our standard bluegrass instruments originated in the Celtic Isles.
